Your 7th grade Mavs hosted the preseason tournament on Saturday and Monday. On Saturday your Mavericks came out in their first live action against the Cardinals of Eudora. Your Mavericks prevailed by a score of 49-39 behind the 12 points of Chris Bybee. Trevor Cluck added 10 and Konnor Green put in 8 points. 4-point scorers were Austin Jager, Dalton Young, Kainon Langley and Cody Stewart. Ty Lovetinsky added a basket for a well-rounded game. The 8th grade Mavericks opened their basketball season by hosting a very competitive preseaon tournament. The tournament includes the following teams: Eudora, Louisburg and Wheatridge. A first round game against Eudora turned out to be a success for the Mavericks. After shaking off some early jitters the Maverick offense put up 21 first half points. Many of the baskets came off of defensive steals, which was the key in taking control of the game. Lake Johnson, Matt Smith and Cole Lillich worked hard to lead the team to a 21-3 halftime score. In the second half the team continued to control the tempo of the game and cruised to a 30-13 victory. Michael Epp and Jake Long were major contributors to the Mavericks second half effort. In the championship game on Monday night your Mavs would face a familiar foe in the Wheatridge Mustangs. Your Mavericks took a half time lead of 26-16 into the locker room. The Mav's defense was working hard. In the end though, a last second shot by Wheatridge fell and your Mavs were defeated by a score of 36-35. Chris Bybee and Trevor Cluck led the way with 8 points. Kainon Langley scored 7. Ty Lovetinsky scored 4 points and Konnor Green, Lincoln Smith, Dalton Young and Cody Stewart each added a basket. Way to go boys, you really worked hard. The 8th grade Mavericks defended their home court with pride and were victorious in the championship game against Wheatridge 45-39 in overtime. Solid defense and good shooting allowed the Mavs to take early control of teh game. Matt Smith and Cole Lillich played well on both ends of the court leading the team in the first half. The Mavs held a 24-17 lead at the break. In the second half the Mustangs fought hard to get back in the game as the Mavs had some costly turnovers. It took a three-point basket by Cole Lillich to tie the score at 37 at the end of regulation. Once the game went to overtime the Mavs would not be denied. Smith made some key free throws to put the game away, but again the defense in overtime was the key for Spring Hill. Season record is 2-0 and the next game is Thursday, January 8th at home. Your 7th grade Mavericks traveled to Paola last night to do battle with the Panthers. It was a tough, grind it out game as both teams tried to establish themselves down low. At halftime your Mavs were ahead by a score of 22-16 behind the pressure defense of Austin Jager and Chris Bybee. Ty Lovetinsky was making lay-up after lay-up as the guards fed him the ball. In the second half, it was more of the same as dribble penetration opened up lay-ups for your Mavericks. In the end your Mavericks prevailed by a score of 38-32. Chris Bybee led the scorers with 10 points. Ty Lovetinsky had 9 points. Trevor Cluck and Austin Jager each put in 6 points. Kainon Langley, Konnor Green and Michael Thomas each added a basket. Way to go boys and get back on the winning track. Thanks fans for your support, you were awesome. Come out Tuesday as your Mavericks host the Trojans of Osawatomie. Last night your 7th grade JV Mavericks traveled to Paola to take on the Panthers in their first action of the year. The game got started off right with a quick 4-0 lead for your Mavericks. After that however, it was back and forth as neither team could build a substanial lead before half. The second half was much the same and the lead went back and forth the entire game. In the end however, your JV Mavericks pulled out an impressive win versus a very good team with a score of 35-32. Your leading scorer was Drew Cygan as he recorded 9 points. Josh Pope and Neil Hickman both had six points. The key to the victory however, was our team defense that put pressure on the Panthers all night. Reid Burger chased down every ball while Trey Bryant and Trevor Splichal made it extremely difficult for the Panthers to even move the ball down the court. Elijah was the big man on the boards and Brad Bink played a solid game both offensively and defensively. Thanks to our fans who showed up last night, you were a big help. |

The 8th grade Varsity Mavericks continued their winning ways with what may be the best overall game they have played all season. A 35-27 victory over the Paola Panthers improved their season record to 3 wins, 0 losses. In the first half both teams played aggressive man to man defense. It was truly an even game with a 14-14 tie at the end of the second quarter. Lake Johnson did a nice job of getting teh team off to a good start. The defensive effort of Sam Jesberg set the tone of the game for the Mavericks. The start of the second half was key for the Mavs with some key steals that created easy baskets. After establishing a 5 to 7 point lead in the 3rd quarter the Mavs played well as a team and came out with a victory. Matt Smith was 4 for 4 from the free throw line to help put the game out of reach. Super effort as a team on offense and defense continues to a focus! Great Job! The Mavs played hard the whole game and led most of the game. Paola did make a run late in the third quarter. The Mavericks finished out the fourth quarter with great defense and a few free throws to the ice game. Niles Kahn had 12 points and Tyler Crabtree added 10 points to lead the Mavs. Alec Weaver had 4 steals to lead the defensive effort. The boys play next Tuesday against Osawatomie at SHMS. Your 7th grade varsity Mavs turned up the defensive pressure last night in their game against the Trojans of Osawatomie. Behind the hard-nosed defense of Lincoln Smith and Austin Jager, your Mavericks held the Trojans to 15 point on the night. Offensively, it was balance on score sheet for SHMS. Trevor Cluck scored 11. Konnor Green put in 8 points. Chris Bybee, Ty Lovetinsky and Kainon Langley each scored 6. Austin Jager added 4 points while Dalton Young scored 2. The final score was Spring Hill 43 and Osawatomie 15. Your Mavs play at home on Thursday night versus the Cardinals of Eudora. Thanks cheerleaders and fans for your rockin' support. The 8th grade varsity Mavericks downed Osawatomie by a score of 38-18 to improve their record to 4-0. Alec Weaver and Andy Shields sparked the Mavs by providing quality play off of the bench and combined for 20 points. The effort of Sam Jesberg and Michael Epp continues to be a key to the team success. Nine players scoring for the Mavs and a 60% team shooting average indicated a great team effort. The Mavericks must continue to work hard to improve as the toughest part of their schedule is approaching. A trip to play Eudora on Thursday will be the next test for the 8th grade team. Your 7th grade varsity entertained the Cardinals of Eudora last night in what turned out to be a fantastic game. Your Mavs took a 16-11 lead into the locker room at halftime. Michael Thomas was the show as he shut down Eudora's best player all night long. In the second half SHMS came out blazing and took a 27-16 lead in the 3rd quarter. Eudora made a run though and cut into the lead until som clutch free throws by Chris Bybee sealed it for the Mavs as they came off the floor a 30-26 winner. Austin Jager and Chris Bybee each put in 7 points. Ty Lovetinsky added 4 points. Michael Thomas, Trevor Cluck and Konner Green all scored 3 points. It was a super team effort and big time finishing in the end. Cheerleaders Awesome. Fans superfantastic. Thank you all for you your support. Come out next Thursday and see your Mavs take on the Whirlwinds of Ottawa. Last night your 7th grade JV hosted the Eudora Cardinals in their third game of the season. With a chance to go 3-0 in the win/loss column your Mavericks left nothing to chance jumping out to a big lead early in the 1st half. Coming out in the second half your Mavericks picked up where they left off playing hard nosed defense which led to easy lay ups. The final score was 47 to 16 as the JV protected their home court. Leading scorers were: Josh Pope, Drew Cygan and Reid Burger. Leading the way with rebounds were: Elijah Schnetzler, Tre Bryant and Neil Hickman. The defense was solid with Brad Bink, Luke Weaver, Jordan Martin and Trevor Splichal leading the way. Your Mavericks will host the Ottawa Whirlwinds this Thursday 1/22/09. After a slow first half start your 8th grade varsity Mavs downed the Eudora Cardinals 35-18. The victory improves the season record to 5 wins, 0 losses. Lake Johnson and Sam Jesberg combined for 10 steals to lead the defensive effort. Offensively Johnson, Cole Lillich and Alec Weaver scored 23 of 35 Mav points. The next game will be at Ottawa on Thursday, January 22nd. Your 7th grade varsity Mavericks hosted the Whirlwinds of Ottawa last night and came out on top with a 42-15 victory. The defense for your Mavs was stupendous as they harassed the Whirlwinds to no end. Chris Bybee led the defensive charge with 9 steals and ended with 9 points. Kainon Langley was the man from the charity stripe last night going 7 for 9 and ending up with 13 points. Michael Thomas scored 7 points on the night and Austin Jager chipped in 4. Ty Lovetinsky added 3 points going 3 for 4 from the free throw line. Konner Green, Trevor Cluck and Cody Stewart each scored 2 points. Fantastic game boys. Super job cheerleaders and fans for supporting your Mavericks like rock stars. Last night your 7th grade JV Mavericks looked to improve an already perfect record to 4 wins and 0 losses while hosting the Whirlwinds of Ottawa. It was a team effort that proved to be too much for the visiting team as teh game was never in doubt. The final score was 40-7 for an impressive victory by your JV Maverick basketball squad. The 8th grade varsity Maverick team suffered their first loss of the season on the road against a very talented Ottawa Whirlwind team. After an early onslaught by the Whirlwinds in the first quarter the Mavs competed well scoring 30 point to 34 by Ottawa. The effort of Michael Epp, Sam Jesberg and Lake Johnson were exceptional on both ends of the court. Cole Lillich and Johnson each had eight points to pace the Mavericks. Your 7th grade varsity basketball team braved the elements last night on a trek to Mill Creek Middle School. It was worth the trip however as your Mavs held onto a 27-25 victory. Chris Bybee was unstoppable as he paced the Mavericks with 17 points. Trevor Cluck scored 4 while Michael Thomas, Dalton Young and Kainon Langley each chipped in a bucket. Defensively, Dalton Young kept their big guy from scoring while Michael Thomas shut down their guard play. Austin Jager and Chris Bybee each had 5 steals on the night and Trevor Cluck hit the boards and collected 9 rebounds. Way to go fellas, you really worked hard all night. Thanks to the super fans that made the slippery trip. Tuesday night your 7th grade JV Mavericks took their perfect record on the road to face an unfamiliar foe in the Mill Creek Mustangs. It was apparent early on that it was going to be an epic battle till the end. The game had a feel of a tug of war match, as Mill Creek would try to pull away to an insurmountable lead when all of a sudden your Mavericks would fight back with-in striking distance. By the end of the game your Mavericks gave themselves a chance to win, unfortunately they fell a little short losing their first game of the season by six points. While the end result was not to our liking, you would have been proud of how the JV Mavericks never quit and kept fighting for the win. The 8th grade varsity Maverick team suffered a tough loss on their home court Tuesday night to the Mill Creek Mustangs. The final score was 38-40. In the first half both teams were very aggressive, which made for a very exciting game to watch. Cole Lillich had 11 first half points to keep the Mavs close to the Mustangs. Jake Long and Lake Johnson also had 4 points each before halftime. The game was tied at 21 at the break. The second half was just as pressure packed as the first. The Mavs found themselves leading 31-28 at the end of the third quarter. The final quarter was back and forth between teams, however, the Mavs could not capitalize on shot attempts in the last six seconds of the game. This effort allowed the Mavs to put up another victory by a score of 40-27. Kendall Ashby and Niles Kahn had 10 and 9 points, respectively, to lead the team. The Mavs were clicking on all cylinders in the first half jumping out to a 28-6 lead. Tyler Crabtree and Jacob McDade were key factors in the first half on defense. In the second half, the Mustangs rallied but came up short in the end. Austin Pittman chipped in a basket in the 4th quarter to aid in the Mavs victory. Your 7th grade varsity Mavericks played their best game of the season last night against a very savvy Baldwin Bulldog team. With one minute remaining in the fourth, your Mavs were down by one needing a defensive stop. It wasn't meant to be and the Bulldogs pulled out a 36-32 victory. Offensively, Chris Bybee led the way with 11 points. Trevor Cluck and Kainon Langley were big down low and chipped in 9 and 8 points respectively. Michael Thomas and Dalton Young each added a basket. It was one heck of a game and your Mavs never quit. Thanks again superfans for all your hard cheering. The 7th grade will be at home next Tuesday against the Louisburg Wildcats. Come on out and enjoy some quality basketball. Last night your 7th grade JV Maverick squad took a trip to the dungeon that is the Baldwin Bulldog basketball court. From the beginning your Mavericks came out ready to go toe-to-toe with a good Bulldog basketball team. The Mavericks defensive pressure was causing havoc with the Bulldog offense as guys like Tre Bryant, Reid Burger and Drew Cygan were causing turnover after turnover. By half not much was decided as the Mavericks went to the locker room with a 19-18 half time lead. The second half was much the same with the scoring going back and forth the entire game. The key to your Mavericks staying in the game was timely rebounding by the likes of Elijah Schnetzler and Neil Hickman, and great ball handling by Lincoln Smith and Jordan Martin allowed your Mavericks down the floor on offense to score easy lay-ups. In the end however your Mavericks fell three points short with a final score of 31-34. Boys keep your head up it was the best game you have played all year. The 8th grade varsity Maverick team came away with an impressive 35-31 victory against the Baldwin Bulldogs. The Mavs battled foul trouble most of the game with positive minutes played by nine players. Lake Johnson, Alec Weaver and Cole Lillich paced the team offensively, while Sam Jesberg and Michael Epp continued their defensive dominance. Jake Long's performance was solid on both ends of the court. There were many lead changes and pivotal points in the game, but the Mavs offensive teamwork wore down their opponents in the final quarter. Great job Mavs...The team will be back in action next Tuesday at Louisburg and then Thursday at Wheatridge. Thanks to all the fans and cheerleaders for the great support! Your 7th grade varsity Mavericks played host to the Louisburg Wildcats last night and behind a balanced scoring attack defeated the Wildcats by a score of 49-32. Defensively, your Mavs played well and kept the Wildcats from finding any rhythm. Michael Thomas, Austin Jager and Lincoln Smith were the fearsome threesome as they played voracious defense. On offense, Trevor Cluck led the way with 12 points. Chris Bybee added 9 while Austin Jager put in 8 points. Kainon Langley added 6 points with some great put backs. Konnor Green scored 5, Michael Thomas had 4 and Dalton Young swished in 3 points. Ty Lovetinsky also got into the act and hit a big bucket in the first quarter. Great job fans and cheerleaders for being the best rooter oners in the league. Come out on Thursday to see your 7th grade Mavs take on the Wheatridge Mustangs. Last night your 7th grade JV Mavericks hosted the Wildcats of Louisburg in a game of two halves. In the first half your Mavericks came out on fire both offensively and defensively. By the end of the first half your Mavericks were up by a score of 12-6. However, the Wildcats came out of the locker room looking to change the scoreboard around and your Mavericks didn't have the answer. In the end your Mavericks fell short by a score of 29-21 which moves their overall record to 4-3. Come out Thursday as your Mavericks will host the Wheatridge Mustangs in a long time heated rivalry. The 8th grade varsity Mavericks took on a determined Louisburg Wildcat team and came up short 21-32. The Mavs had trouble scoring against the Wildcat defense and found themselves behind 5-14 at the end of the first half. In the second half the Mavs cut the lead to six points, but could not get any closer. The Mavs hope to get back on the winning track when they travel to Wheatridge Thursday evening. It was tough going off the bat as your Mavericks were down 8-6 after the first quarter. Then it was all Mavs. Led by big Kainon Langley's 10 points, your Maverick offense was hitting on all cylinders. Austin Jager scored 8 points while Konnor Green, Dalton Young and Trevor Cluck pitched in 6 each. Chris Bybee scored 4 points and Michael Thomas and Ty Lovetinsky each added a bucket. Defense was the real key to victory as Austin Jager and Lincoln Smith had 5 and 4 steals, respectively. In the end your Mavericks prevailed by a score of 44-22. Last night your 7th grade JV Mavericks hosted the Mustangs of Wheatridge as the team was looking to end a three game losing streak. Your Mavericks came out smoking as they took a 12-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was much the same as the half came to and end with a commanding lead of 18-7. The Mustangs however, would not go away and chipped away at the lead while your Mavericks stuggled offensively. Don't worry though as the Mavericks defense was just too much as they sealed the victory with a score of 24-17. Scorers for the night were Bryant, Hickman, Martin, Splichal all with four points. Burger, Smith, Weaver, and Stewart all contributed with 2 points. Thanks as always goes to Mr. Fleer and our fantastic cheerleaders who lead to victory. |

The 8th grade varsity Mavs traveled to Wheatridge Thursday evening to take on the Mustangs. The Mavs were trying to play "catch up" the entire game after the Mustangs took a 9-15 first quarter lead. In the end the Mavs fell to the Mustangs by a score of 40-51. Cole Lillich worked extremely hard under the basket and had 23 of the Mavs points. Next for the Mavs is Pioneer Ridge on Monday night. The 8th grade Mavs JV was on top of their game early Saturday morning and defeated the Ottawa Whirlwinds by a score of 33-24. Conner Jones, Niles Kahn and Walker Glaze dominated inside to lead the team. The key to the victory was a solid fourth quarter effort on defense that wore down the Whirlwinds and two made free throws by Tyler Crabtree. The game was highlighted by an amazing basket by Garrett Duncan. The first game of the day was versus the Ottawa Whirlwinds. Your Mavericks came out smoking hot as they got off to a 12-0 lead. Thanks to suffocating defense and some fine shooting your Mavericks moved out of the 1st round of the tournament by defeating Ottawa 33-4. In the championship game your Mavericks would face the Paola Panthers. It was a rematch from the opening game in which your Mavericks were victorious. The Panthers came out strong as they were looking to revenge the only loss of the season. Your Mavericks fell behind early, but like the fighters they were drew to a tie a couple of times in the first half. The second half again saw your Mavericks fall behind. This time even with three big second half three's your Mavericks could not pull out the victory. It was a great day as the Mavericks brought home the second place medal. It was an exciting game that came down to the last minute with your Mavs down 5. A furious rally and some great defense put SHMS in a position to tie with 10 seconds left. Kainon Langley rebounded a miss and put it in to tie the score and send it to overtime. In overtime it wasn't meant to be however as the Jags went on to win by a score of 52-49. Trevor Cluck had 23 points. Chris Bybee had 9. Ty Lovetinsky scored 7 huge points and Kainon Langley scored 6. Next up for your Mavericks is a home game next week against Wellsville. The 8th grade varsity Mavs finished out their league regular season hosting Pioneer Ridge. In the first half the Mavs played extremely hard pressure defense that lead to some easy baskets. At half SHMS was down 17-22. The second half was also highly contested, but the Mavs came up short 31-42. Next, the Wellsville Eagles come to town for a three game night Tuesday, February 17th. Your 7th grade varsity Mavericks hosted the Eagles of Wellsville last night. It was an uphill climb for your Mavs as they just couldn't find any momentum. In the end your Mavs fell by a score of 39-46. Trevor Cluck was high point man scoring 14. Austin Jager and Kainon Langley each had 8 points. Konnor Green scored 7 and Chris Bybee finished with 2 points. It was a tough loss, but your Mavs get to come back real soon as they take on Wheatridge in the first round of the league tournament. The 8th grade varsity Mavericks ended the regular season play with a home victory over the Wellsville Eagles. Nine players contributed to provide balanced scoring in the 40-17 win. Alec Weaver gave super effort defensively and benefited by scoring 10 points. Lake Johnson got the team off to a good start by scoring two early baskets. Next for the Mavs is the post-season tournament game at Louisburg on Thursday, February 19th starting at 4 pm. | Feb 19 | Thu | 4:00p 7/8 BBB League Tournament-1st Round-TBA-SHMS | Your 7th grade varsity Mavs hosted the opening round of the league tournament last night and 3 minutes into the game it didn't look good for the boys. Down 18-12 in the first quarter something amazing happened. Your Mavericks kicked it up a gear and threw it into overdrive as they finished the first half on a 20-6 run. Behind the sharp shooting of Chris Bybee and Austin Jager, your Mavericks were ready to play. In the second half it was more of the same as Ty Lovetinsky and Trevor Cluck finished lay-up after lay-up. When the final horn sounded your Mavs were victorious by a score of 58-47. Now they head to Pioneer Ridge on Saturday to take on the Jaguars. Trevor Cluck led the scoring with 15 points. Chris Bybee added 14 points. Austin Jager pumped in 11 points. Ty Lovetinsky shot in 8 points and Michael Thomas ended the game with 6 huge points. Rounding out the scoring was Kainon Langley with 4 points. Your 7th grade varsity Mavericks wrapped up their season over the weekend at the season ending league tournament. The first opponents for your Mavs were the Cardinals of Eudora. Your Mavericks started strong and never looked back. Great defensive hustle by Dalton Young and Michael Thomas led the way for the SHMS. Spring Hill advanced to the finals beating the Cardinals by a score of 45-30. Michael Thomas led the way with 12 points. Trevor Cluck scored 9. Chris Bybee and Konnor Green each added 6 points. Austin Jager scored 5. Kainon Langley was huge and scored 4 points. Ty Lovetinsky and Dalton Young added 2 and 1 points, respectively. With the victory over the Cardinals, your Mavs advanced to the finals to take on the Bulldogs of Baldwin. After a close first half, the Bulldogs showed why they were undefeated on the year. They pulled away and your Mavs could not recover. In the end the Bulldogs were victorious by a score of 55-30. Your Mavericks played hard and never gave up. The awesome "superfans" and all their enthusiasm wasn't enough to carry the Mavericks. They end the season with 10 wins and 5 losses. They were the second place team in the league tournament and if you ask nice enough, they may show you their medals. Nice season boys, you came a long way. Thanks fans for making the trip. In the second round of the tournament the 8th grade Mavs took on the Eudora Cardinals. It was evident from the start that the Mavs were ready to play jumping out to a 11-2 first quarter lead. Alec Weaver and Cole Lillich were solid performers to set the pace in the first half. 23-3 was the halftime score. The Mavs continued the domination in the second half with seven players cracking the scoring column and finished off the cardinals 41-13. Mavs 41 - Eudora 13 Season Record: 8-6 Scoring: Conner Jones 2 Lake Johnson 3 Sam Jesberg 2 Matt Smith 5 Alec Weaver 9 Andy Shields 2 Cole Lillich 14 Michael Epp 0 Jake Long 4 The final game of the season and tournament matched up the Mavs and Paola Panthers. The first half was very even with the Mavs holding a two point advantage, 21-19. Jake Long put in 5 early points to lead the Mavs. The Mavs regrouped at halftime and came out playing with super defensive intensity. Lake Johnson ran wild getting steals and layups resulting in 11 second half points, Lillich added 12. It was a total team effort again with seven players scoring. Your Mavs took fifth place and finished the season 9-6. Great Job!! Special thanks to Mr. Fleer and Ms. Estes for a great tournament.
